Thousands of oil patches?...Gas blasts...Americans killed

8 June, 2010 NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The government official overseeing the response to the Gulf oil spill says a cap that BP has placed on its blown-out well is capturing about a half-million gallons of oil a day. That's believed to be about one-third to three-quarters of the oil spewing into the sea. But the massive slick has broken into hundreds and even thousands of patches.

CLEBURNE, Texas (AP) — A resident in a nearby Texas town says the blast sounded like "a huge rumbling" and a tornado. One worker was killed and others injured when they punctured a 36-inch natural gas pipeline Monday while making holes for utility poles. The explosion happened in Cleburne, about 50 miles southwest of Dallas.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia officials say seven workers were burned when a crew drilling a natural gas well through an abandoned coal mine hit a pocket of methane gas that ignited. The explosion happened near Moundsville. The gas is expected to burn for up to three days.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Seven Americans and two Australians are among 12 foreign troops killed Monday in separate attack in Afghanistan. Officials say it was the worst day of the year for foreign troops. Twelve died in all. The attacks come before a major NATO operation against a Taliban stronghold.

DETROIT (AP) — A self-described hit man has pleaded guilty in Detroit to eight counts of second-degree murder, including the contract killing of a Detroit police officer's wife. Vincent Smothers says beside the officer's wife, the rest of his victims were drug dealers. Smothers, who is 29, faces a minimum 52 years in prison.
